Out of the kitchen
I hate to admit it, but I actually watched FOX's show Kitchen Confidential last night. (Hey, I just kept the TV on after one of my fave shows, Arrested Development.) The show is a fictionalized version of Anthony Bourdain's famous book. Instead of Tony Bourdain, there is "Jack Bourdain", and instead of Les Halles, the restaurant is a fictional "Nolita". The show stinks like Camembert: lame acting and poorly written in a trying-too-hard-to-be-witty-and-ironic sort of way. It also sadly reminds me of two of my past fave shows: Xander from Buffy is the pastry chef (and is looking like he's eaten too much pastry) and Sam from Freaks and Geeks (who has gone through puberty since then, without positive results) is an apprentice. Anthony Bourdain is annoying enough in real life-- (see his annoying "I'm cool" Travel Channel show. Dude, could you look any sadder and older in your lame ripped jeans and CBGB t-shirt?)-- did we have to see a younger (albeit much better-looking) fictionalized version of him? I am tapped out on this guy.
That said, I'll still give it a second chance-- but that's it! Better yet, I think I'll rent actual good food movies: Dinner Rush (for the restaurant politics), Big Night (for the family politics and the overindulging), and Eat Drink Man Woman (to make me hungry).

Fundraiser for Hurricane Katrina
My daughter and my niece took a cooking camp this summer at an excellent cooking school for kids in our area. The school is called Little Chef Club in Issaquah, and it is run by and taught by the nicest, most knowledgeable couple, Francis and Vivien.
This past weekend they held a benefit event for Hurricane Katrina victims. The kids went and made care packages to be mailed to the Douglass Elementary School in Houston, which is one of the schools that has been reopened specifically for children displaced by the hurricane. The event was a great way for the kids to get involved-- they have been asking a lot of questions about the hurricane, and it was a really nice way for them to do something to help. (Kids after all, can't just write a check and send it!) Oh, and the granola bars they made smelled awesome!

Slice into a mango
I can't wait to get one of these new devices-- a mango slicer! It's about time someone came up with this. I can't count the number of times I've been cutting into a Manila mango (the only kind I like to eat) and have wished that I could have something that could get around that pesky pit. I usually really hate one-use tools (Alton Brown has the same attitude: he has even done a show on building your own smoker out of terra cotta pots. Genius!) But if you eat a lot of mango, this is worth the extra space in the drawer. Even the New York Times was happy about this. Thanks OXO!

The case against tipping
New York Times writer Steven A. Shaw says tipping should be abolished. He makes a convincing argument, although anyone who's experienced Dutch service (they don't tip in Holland), may disagree with him about its affect on service. :)
