More racist snacks

So I've been trying in vain to find a link to a video clip, but with no updates to racist ice cream lately, I've noticed an ad running in heavy rotation for Dairy Queen's "tragic" Moolatte ice cream drinks. This ad has me convinced that the execs at Dairy Queen really are totally clueless. (I initially questioned the authenticity of this interview from last summer, but with this new ad, I definitely think it's real.)

Anyhow, because I can't find video, I'll just have to describe it. An African-American woman is crying at a picnic table, with a Moolatte in front of her. Her African-American boyfriend arrives and gives her a big hug-- she is lamenting the illness or death of her cat (it isn't totally clear). While they are hugging, she has her Moolatte in hand, and it's positioned close to her shoulder. As he's comforting her, the boyfriend is trying to sip the drink's straw, obviously distracted by the deliciousness of the Moolatte.

What was Dairy Queen thinking? It's a given that the name Moolatte is suspect (especially since it blends brown coffee with white ice cream!), but to feature an African-American couple in the ad is so beyond clueless. The first time I saw it, my mouth was totally open and I told Kyle, "That guy is trying to get with a Moolatte! Behind his girlfriend's back!!" As if light-skinnedness weren't already an issue in minority communities. I'm going to venture a guess that Dairy Queen does not have any brown execs (although there is something vaguely charming about this total cluelessness about historically racist terms. They are like, High yellow?Sambo? Who knows!)

Speaking of racist snacks, I still have not gotten my hands on some Filipinos (heh), but Kyle's friend Tomas clued me in on a Spanish candy that my mind had repressed: Conguitos! Oh, and the memory came flooding back. Okay, these definitely take the cake in the racist snacks parade. They are chocolate-covered peanuts that come in a package adorned by a little black-faced baby with huge red lips and he is actually holding a spear. Man, Spain definitely gets the award for the racist treats-- I found this paper discussing Conguitos as well as other racist food products (to read it in "sort-of" English, Babelfish comes in handy). I guess Tomas was already in Italy by the time the S.O.S. for racist snack food came through, so no Conguitos (or Filipinos) for me, boo. I suppose a trip to Spain is in order!

Eek!!

Oh yeah, Sonja also mentioned an Australian cheese called "Coon" and a European candy called "Negros"...I'm waiting to see the packaging for those. Send some my way, Sonbon!

Happy birthday to me!

Yesterday was my birthday and my sister got me one of the best gifts EVER. Thanks to a collaboration between Trish, Kyle and my good friend (currently living in Amsterdam) Steve Z., I received a HUGE box of Puccini Bomboni chocolates! If you've never had Puccini chocolates, you haven't had chocolate. They are that good. And the only place to buy them is Amsterdam. After tasting one bad American chocolate too many, I wrote extensively about Puccini in a previous post.

Anyway, I will be gorging myself on chocolate this week and working on my Vegas and NYC trip reports. Oh sweet delicious chocolates....

The accidental scone

A few weeks ago, I decided to make pancakes for breakfast (usually when I have time, we carb out at breakfast-- either pancakes or waffles are the order of the day). Halfway through the process, after mixing the dry ingredients and making 'clabbered' milk (milk curdled with a tablespoon of lemon juice; handy when buttermilk isn't available), I realized that there were no eggs in the house-- something that never happens in my house. (It's basically like, if my house didn't have butter or bacon. Never!)

So instead of panicking, I thought about making scones. I had a few scone recipes that manage without eggs, so I modified a combination of a few (and used that clabbered milk as well so it wouldn't get wasted). What resulted was an unusual scone-- not fluffy, but instead crispy and delicious. It was awesome straight out of the oven with just butter (or butter and jelly, as my kids like it).

The Accidental Scone
2 cups flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup cold butter, cut into small chunks
3/4 cups 'clabbered' milk (3/4 cup milk mixed with 1 tablespoon lemon juice, allowed to sit for 5 minutes until thickened)

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Combine the dry ingredients in a large shallow bowl. Toss in the chunks of cold butter and toss to combine. With a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the flour until it's the texture of course meal, with some pea sized pieces of butter. Make a well in the middle of the mixture and pour in the milk. Mix with a fork until combined. On a floured surface, turn out the mixture and pat it down until it's about 1/2-inch thick. Cut with a knife into 8 triangular pieces and transfer to a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake for 10 minutes, or until it looks brown and crispy on the top. Careful when opening the oven-- hot steam will rush out and if you want to keep your eyebrows, be careful! :)

Enjoy immediately with good butter and jam.

More bacony goodness

Bacon does make everything taste better! My kids aren't that nuts about veggies, but put in some diced bacon and they're all over it. I'm working on how many recipes I can generate that call for 3 slices of bacon... we'll see!

Lekker!

Asparagus with bacon

1-1/2 pounds asparagus
3 slices of bacon, diced
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
Salt and pepper to taste

Heat a wok over very high heat (preferably a seasoned carbon steel wok). Once it's scorching hot, add the bacon and stirring, fry until almost crispy. Remove the bacon pieces with a wire spider, leaving a couple tablespoons bacon grease in the pan. Return to high heat and add the asparagus. Don't stir it right away; just let it sit to get some nice charred flavor on it, about 2-3 minutes. Stir it and let it sit again for 2-3 minutes until it has nice charred spots all over it. Add the oyster sauce and stir to combine. Add the salt and pepper (I add probably a 1-2 teaspoons salt). Add the bacon and stir to combine. Remove to a dish and serve immediately with steamed rice.
